The Heaphy Track and the rest of the Golden Bay area (northern-most part of south island)

Enchanted forest.

Monkey face.

The first few days of the track look like this...

...until the track spills out into a Hawaiian-esque paradise. Its not a total paradise though, because at dawn and dusk you get swamped by blood-sucking sand flies. The ocean is quite ferocious here on the western coast, as opposed to the gentle waters of the east coast.

The Heaphy track was a 5 day, one way trip, so to get back north, I took this plane (as opposed to a two-day bus trip that would have cost twice as much).

A group of typical sheep on a typical piece of farmland.

A marshmallow field.

Private farmland opening up to ocean near the very tip of the south island.

Same location.

2 Hawaiians, a Canadian, a Frenchman, and an Austrian. I ended up hitching around with these guys for a few days after the Heaphy track.
