Tongariro Crossing

On the road north from Wellington to Tongariro National Park.
Farmland on the north island.
More farmland.
Mt. Ngauruhoe (right) and Mt. Tongariro.

Mt. Ngauruhoe, which was Mt. Doom in the Lord of the Rings films.
At the peak.
I put a red filter over my digital camera and got this bizarre pic of the Red Crater.
Walking through a lava field on the track that completely encircles Mt. Ngauruhoe.

Mt. Taranaki: Around the Mountain Track

Mt. Taranaki, sticking uncharacteristically out of the ground the way Mt. Fuji does.
Ascending to the rim.
The top.
Looking up through one of the rock strewn valleys towards the peak.

Possum...these guys, and anything else larger than a cat, are relentlessly hunted in New Zealand.
View outside of one of the huts along the track.

Wellington city

Art installation projecting people's shadows on the side wall of the Te Papa museum.

Slow motion pics of some kind of traveling circus act that peformed daily free concerts.

Shooting a commercial for Beck's German beer in downtown.
Tabla with sarod accompaniment at the Te Papa 10th anniversary celebration. I've been taking tabla lessons from Subhash, the guy on right, for over a month now.

The Slip Way: where people come to practice driving sideways.
The Dragon Boat Festival...annual event where local high schools and businesses compete in a 200 yard dash(approximately). I think there was something like 50 groups represented.

The Heaphy Track and the rest of the Golden Bay area (northern-most part of south island)

Enchanted forest.

Monkey face.

The first few days of the track look like this...

...until the track spills out into a Hawaiian-esque paradise. Its not a total paradise though, because at dawn and dusk you get swamped by blood-sucking sand flies. The ocean is quite ferocious here on the western coast, as opposed to the gentle waters of the east coast.

The Heaphy track was a 5 day, one way trip, so to get back north, I took this plane (as opposed to a two-day bus trip that would have cost twice as much).

A group of typical sheep on a typical piece of farmland.

A marshmallow field.

Private farmland opening up to ocean near the very tip of the south island.

Same location.

2 Hawaiians, a Canadian, a Frenchman, and an Austrian. I ended up hitching around with these guys for a few days after the Heaphy track.

View of downtown Wellington, from Mount Victoria. I live directly opposite this point on the far hills.

My abode, furnished with bed, chair, and ridiculously large record playing unit.

The Parliament building, or 'the beehive', where things that the rest of the world doesn't care about happens.
